The Rev. Russell H. Allen, Associate Clergy

The important fact about Russ Allen personally is that his joy is walking along the ocean or watching the sunset across Cape Cod Bay with Louisa, his wife of 42 years and a Hospice nurse, talking about music, sports, ideas and issues, or what we have recently read, with his son, Joshua, 36, who with his wife Rebecca, son Luke, 4, and daughter Madeline, 18 mo., lives in Milton. Josh works in the publishing business in Boston and is a successful free-lance journalist. Russ also welcomes spending a day with his daughter, Dr. Erica Gelven, 40, a professor at a community college, her husband, Marc, a Sergeant in the Connecticut State Police, and their two daughters, Rachel, 7, and Sara, 5. A warm afternoon spent on the beach, a winter day on cross country skis, a new movie or a novel or humor collection by one of his eclectic group of favorite authors, all number among his renewing activities.

Academically, Russ is a graduate of Bard College (1965) and the General Theological Seminary (1968) and received his MA in History from Northern Michigan University (1990). He has participated in courses on intellectual history of the Christian Church's involvement with society and its issues, and more recently, studied the religious and other aspects of the American Civil War, as well as Abraham Lincoln and other people involved in that period. He continues to write reviews and short stories, and has conducted research on a yet-to-be-finished article examining Episcopal clergy who were spies during the Civil War. He is also interested in Mark Twain (and his pastor/friend, Joseph Twitchell) and recently discovered mystery novels by child psychologists.

Russ is rooted spiritually in the Episcopal Church as that has changed over the past half-century. He was raised in the Episcopal Cathedral in Hartford, CT., where he found support for his educational and personal development. From this experience came a sense of gratitude to, and a growing awareness of living in the presence of God. Traditionally rooted yet often reexamined, his spiritual journey to an unknown destination has contained many stops, each one of which he has experienced fully before moving on to the next. He manifests his Christian vocation as a person, husband, father, priest, student and member of the human community.

Professionally, Russ has led mission and parish congregations in rural, suburban and urban areas in New England and the Mid-West and serving in academic ministries in Connecticut, West Virginia, Michigan and Wisconsin. He has participated in the oversight of ecumenical and judicatory ministry in higher education, served as the Chaplain of the Clinton Police and Volunteer Departments, and was the Search Consultant for two Cape Cod parishes. He now is an Associate member of the Clergy Ministry Team at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville, MA, where in addition to leading worship and preaching he has responsibility for baptisms, the Adult Forum, and the relationship of the parish with the Mission of the Wider Church.

After relocating in Harwich on Cape Cod upon their retirement, Russ and Louisa continue to explore new activities, including as volunteer members of the Marine Mammal Rescue and Research program of the International Fund for Animal Welfare [IFAW] and developing her "cottage industry" making children's smocked dresses.

Rev. Paul Thompson

Paul Thompson

Paul was born and raised in Spartanburg, SC. In his mid High School years, he moved with his family to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After graduating from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN in 1958, he entered the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, MA.

Receiving an M.Div. degree in 1962, he was ordained to the Priesthood the following year in the Diocese of Mississippi. He served several mission congregations in the Mississippi delta, including the Church of the Redeemer, Greenville, one of two African American congregations in the Diocese.

In February of 1963 Paul married Sallie (Bunny) McClenahan whom he had met while in seminary. This began an adventurous journey together which included the challenges of the 1960's Civil Rights movement, the broadening experience of a year of study for Paul at Oxford University in England, the joy of adopting their two children while in the Diocese of Washington, when Paul was Vicar of St. James, Bowie, and the excitement of moving to Vermont in 1974 when Paul became Rector of St. Michael's, Brattleboro. During these years, Bunny worked as a medical secretary and Paul was deeply involved both in the Diocese and in the community. They both enjoyed participation in the Vermont Episcopal Cursillo, being hockey parents and involvement in the ongoing life of the parish.

Retiring after 24 years at St. Michael's they moved to their new home in Cummaquid in 1998. During the intervening years, Paul served as supply priest for several congregations on the Cape before becoming a part time Associate Priest at St. Peter's, Osterville. He is Priest in charge of St. Andrew's by- the- Sea summer chapel in Hyannis Port, officiating there in August. His interests are the Osterville Men's Club, Opera New England of Cape Cod, Highland Light Scottish Society and membership in Clan MacTavish Thompson USA. He enjoys reading historical novels and science fiction, cooking, gardening and cutting grass riding his John Deere tractor. They have a rag doll cat "Miss Daisy" who provides much affection and entertainment.
